Are Video Games Art? Yes!

November 22, 2013 in Video Games

It’s good to be back! In this video, I present my case for why I believe that video games are a type of art, just like painting, sculpture, music, literature and other classic forms of art….

  1. Most of the people I knkw who arent gamers are amazed by simple apps and
online educational games. I find it sad tjat if a majority of people can
find art in candy crush, yet wouldn’t want to damage their ego as far as
playing actual, serious games. Just give it time, movies used to thoug as
non artistic, but look at them now. It goes the same for video games.

  2. Yo mama’s so ugly, when she goes to E3, people confuse her for a Goomba. To
be honest, I’m better at yo mama jokes that AREN’T trying to be funny. I’m
an anti-humor fan, which is why I watch Tim and Eric.

  3. I don’t get why people deem it necessary to prove roger ebert wrong. No
matter how respected he is, he’s just one movie critic. Why can’t we just
ignore his shortsighted beliefs and continue to evolve this wonderful
medium of ours until he, along with EVERYONE ELSE simply have to come forth
and admit that this is indeed an artform we’re talking about.

  4. As good as your attempt is, Tim and Eric said that their biggest
inspiration is David Lynch, and said that they derive their humor “as much
from the awkwardness of The Office as the awkwardness of David Lynch
movies”. They are also immensely inspired by Andy Kaufman, another favorite
of mine. Do you watch Tim and Eric? Because I think it’s one of the most
genius shows ever… as genius as David Lynch!

  8. Sorry to keep commenting here, but I love what you do. Anyways, I do
believe video games are art. However, I don’t believe something being
classified as art is dependent on whether or not you feel immersed or have
something to gain morally. I’d say that high art is definitely that
category I mentioned though. After all, the Mona Lisa is just a painting
right? I think overall though, you should have something to gain from art,
    morale or not.

  9. I think that because the advances in video games are so new that it hasn’t
really had much time to be appretiated as Art. I’m sure early movies would
have also been dismissed at the time because it would still be in its early
stages and that people would just think “Oh… its not a painting or
sculpture its not art”. I think because of the interativity it does make
the player the author of their own story so in a way it may even be more
engaging than any other type of media.

  11. And by that same logic, you watch David Lynch movies! Zing!

  12. Being entertained a form of emotional and intellectual response. You can be
intellectually entertained (Half-life), or emotionally entertained (Mario).
So why would it not be art? Well, because people find the most minute
differences to say no. I know one person who compared video games to roller
coasters. And Roller Coasters are honestly an art form as well. The
argument is NOT “are video games art”, the argument SHOULD be “are video
games GOOD art”. I’d answer “yes”.

  13. Great video. I think games like Pong and the like never were intended to be
art but slowly became them as they became more representative of the time
they were made. You could blindly extrapolate that Pong represents a dark
and empty world where 2 ancient gods battle the futility of this white
ball, in a Samuel Beckett kinda way….but thats just stupid. The ‘pride’
thing you came up with was very true as well.
